Trail Love - Wet Tropics Far North Queensland
Trail Love is what we are passionate about at the Cairns Port Douglas Trail Ultra. We love for adventure and seek single trails, unique wild life and flora and of course those views!
The Cairns Port Douglas Trail Ultra is set across the the Wet Tropics World Heritage Listed Area between Cairns and Port Douglas on the Cassowary Coast, with loads of single trails, steep climbs and descents, amazing views and of course you may be able to spot a rare Cassowary. Shona Stephenson your Race Director (RD), spotted this male Cassowary on her first run in the region! She of course almost crapped herself as he walked casually towards her. The male was also with a chick! YES! A baby Cassowary!
What luck did she have!!!! Her first run in the Wet Tropics and a Cassowary and a Chick sighting. She was on the Gandal wandun Track on the CPTU120, CPTU80, CPTU40, CPTU20 course.
Shona your RD the very next day spotted another one on the Twin bridges track. Sadly, this year the Twin Bridges Track is closed for an upgrade, (Yes in 2022 the course will change to include the Twin Bridges Track ). This forced you’re RD to venture again too Far North Queensland for another trail running holiday to find more single trails for you to use in the Cairns Port Douglas Trail Ultra.
After a day of getting lost following pig trails along a track that wan’t marked on the Qglobe Map, Shona went out and bought a knife for the “wait a whiles” and she made her way along the Clohesy River Rd. The discovery of the Clohesy Fig was a highlight of the run, along with the sighting of King Ferns, and also the amazing grassy ridge near Speewah.
We’ve put together a collection of the best bits from the Cairns Port Douglas Trail Ultra course.
